from an actual combat perspective, it would depend on which weapon you were profficient in. i study kenjutsu, iaijutsu, german longsword, sword and shield and am learning buckler techniques. i personally would choose any of the above weapons(except sword and buckler as i'm not as capable there yet). japanese swords do have harder edges but are less flexible (hence they are less able to take abuse the only time you will see one sword slice through another is because of manufacturing defect or hollywood script) kenjutsu and german longsword techniques have some similarities but german longsword actually has more attacking options(not only the blade but the entire sword is a weapon, pluss the benefit of ringen am schwert should not be overlooked ).there is also a weight/balance difference. katanas tend to be no lighter and often heavier than their european cousins and their balance is usually closer to the tip.this means that they are not as quick. also, the more curve you have in a weapon the less deftness in defense you have.my longsword is lightning quick in fact my katana feels heavy in comparison-although it is the same weight.the longsword blade is eight inches longer giving you an advantage.a rapier or smallsword was a fine gentleman's dueling sword but utterly useless against a real sword in the hands of someone who knows how to use it(don't believe hollywood) in fact if anyone would care to hold a duel with me on an island in international waters- longsword to rapier- we could proove that point but don't forget to get your estate in order first .... to give final answer to this long reply. no martial art can truly be called superior to another. the victory lies in the skill of the warrior. you should check out some of the new books on medieval swordsmanship which are hitting the market.they might help to bring some perspective to this question. for a long time now, european swords have been unfairly( and inaccurately) portrayed as weak, dull, heavy, unwieldy weapons by the asian martial arts community, foil fencing(did i spell that wrong?)community, and hollywood. thankfully things are changing as the truth is becoming more accessable to the public. I tend to agree with TAK, but When i run out of bullets, or the enemy closes, ill reach for the broad sword, Even without elemental enhancements. Over on HK94 forums, we sometimes got caried away and had big drawn out SHTF (" Stuff Hit the Fan) scenarios. most popular was "WHAT IF ZOMBIES INVADED!?!?!?" scenario. In this topic, eveoryone discused what they would grab as they ran out the door to flee in terror of the zombies. If i had a choice of whatever i could muster, id say something .308, and a 2-handed sabre. IP: Logged |

Instead of conventional bayonet, I would rather a trusty broadsword! When the fighting gets close and personal, my blade would go through the enemy and the man behind him! ![]() Uuhh, but then again, that aint possible There are acounts that many soldiers during the 1800's especially, they put their swords on the their rifles on bayonets. By the way, I would choose broadsword over the katana. Especially if I have shield with it! IP: Logged |

Limited edition Mausers. I have one with original markings and scope, it cost me a fortune. I am not sure how much of these are left. The original swatisca were taken off after the war for obvious reasons, so its hard to find an original, re-engineered edition. You can maybe try the Yugoslav M48s. Those are excellent replicas of the original K98s, and some of them exist in military-new condition. They are also far cheaper than the original, around $299 - $500 as opposed to the collector's edition of some $6 - $10k. The M48, a beauty itself, but never as good as the original :P [This message has been edited by Tak (edited 03-01-2005).] IP: Logged |

Oh, well, my friends dad has a 98k, complete with swastikas etc. (I guess you could say they were rubbed off, poorly and incompletely). I could just steal it from him ![]() I was really wondering about the case... is it an original that shipped with the gun, or was that a limited edition thing? or what? Limited collector edition only. The case itself would cost hundreds. IP: Logged |
