welcome to a kind of quiet corner of the net. While there are no threads apparent, that would be because of a sixty day default view. You can elect to read the previous sixteen pages by using the drop-down menu at the head of each subforum. You'll see that option below on each subforum index.Let us know your work and stuff. Everyone enjoys pictures.Images are easy enough if hosted somewhere. The ubb codes are to the left of the text entry. http://netsword.com/ubb/ubbcode.html Cheers Hotspur; some of the early threads are more than a little informative [This message has been edited by Hotspur (edited 05-15-2009).] IP: Logged |

It doesn't get more simple than Hotspur wrote. Try to read it slowly. You're in a place frequented mostly by adults, and therefore the discussion is on an adult level - most of the time. Comprehensive reading is a great skill to have! IP: Logged |

So Eregon625, You are 13 years old and you want to be a "medieval blacksmith". Please understand that "Medieval" means Middle Age and if you live long enough, you too will become middle aged by default. I suggest that you start looking at summer camps which specialize in teaching the smithing skills because this is not something you can learn without a lot of heat, pain, dirt, sweat, pain and hard work; the kind of hard work that most kids today can't comprehend. Or perhaps you would like to apprentice yourself to a middle aged blacksmith in order to learn his trade. You work for free for 10 to 12 years, living in his house, eating his food and being his muscle down at his forge. You contribute your youth and strength and you learn the hard way. In the end, you have a trade with which to earn a living, you have the tools you have made by the skills you have learned and you will be kicked out of your master's shop because you are now his competetion. Go start your own smithy somewhere else. I also suggest that you talk to your folks about wanting to be a B-smith. There are so many better jobs out there like joining the Navy. W. IP: Logged |

Well I think if you want to try your hand at blacksmithing then by all means try it. I personally do not think you need to apprentice yourself for 10 to 12 years. But I do think you need to find some one who does blacksmithing and hang out and get to know them and then ask if you can learn. If I read your fisrt post you never said you wanted to do this full time, only that you wanted to learn how to blacksmith. IP: Logged |

quote: Well it depends if you want to be a smith from Medieval Japan, then it a minimum 18 years apprenticeship... I have a Canadian friend he's currently in Japan doing this. If you want to make European medieval replicas, then the best advice I can give you is to read books, setup your forge, and practice... at least 1 hour a day every day. You can learn by yourself, I had to there's no one else around to learn from where I live. So it's possible.

You could always read about blacksmithing. I would recommend the book The Art of Blacksmithing by Alex W. Bealer. IP: Logged |
